Hamden Public School officials are hoping to lure parents back to school — if only for one day — this fall when it presents a series of workshops aimed at improving student performance.

“Hamden Family University,” planned for one Saturday in October, will be “a free, one-day event offering workshops that appeal to parents of all ages of students of all social backgrounds and educational status that will support their role as partners in their children’s education.” … Continue Reading

Sacred Heart Academy Valedictorian Madeline Ross, Salutatorian Olivia Nicole Kelly and Caroline Kohnert, who is third in the class of 2014.

Sacred Heart Academy marked the end of the 2014-15 school year Saturday morning by awarding diplomas to more than 100 seniors, all of whom will be continuing their education.

“Words cannot express how thrilled I am to be celebrating this moment with this group of 128 outstanding young women,” said Valedictorian Madeline Ross. “We have finally made it, the moment about which we have spent countless hours daydreaming is upon us, and I can only hope that it is all you have hoped and imagined and worked so hard for over the past four years.” … Continue Reading

1del1Sacred Heart Academy President Sr. Sheila O’Neill received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at the Saint Anselm College 121st Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 17, in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Bob Schieffer, anchor and moderator of CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” also received an honorary degree and was this year’s commencement speaker. Schieffer is marking more than 50 years in broadcast journalism and his 45th year at CBS News. Also receiving an honorary degree was Richard J. Microsoft Office Free for Hamden Students

1del1Hamden students and their families will soon be able to download for free software that ordinarily carries with it a hefty price.

The school district has arranged with Microsoft to offer its popular Office software for free, according to Technology Director Karen Kaplan. Each student will be able to download the software to five devices, Kaplan said.

“This has been a long time coming,” Kaplan said. “We have made arrangements with Microsoft to offer to families at no cost to be able to download up to five copies at no cost.” … Continue Reading

1del1Sacred Heart Academy seniors Perry Bowers, Courtney Clark, Molly Duffy, Olivia Kelly, Caroline Kohnert, Rachel Korolyshun, Demery Ormrod, Madeline Ross  and Sydney Sullivan were recently honored with the Superintendent’s Summa Scholar Award in recognition of their superior academic performance at the Archdiocesan Center at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield.

Dr. Dayle R. Hoyt, Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Hartford, recognized each student personally for their academic excellence, and students in turn honored the teacher they considered most influential to their success.

These nine students, all of whom met the 4.3 or higher GPA criteria, were asked to speak about that educator, making the award even more compelling.

Sacred Heart students selected faculty members: Alan Beck (Latin), Sylvie Levallois-Sanchez (French), Richard Marino (Social Studies), Sr. Judith Musco, ASCJ (Math), and Sr. MaryJane Paolella, ASCJ (Science). … Continue Reading

Hamden School Board Worries About End of Alliance Grant

school boardThe Board of Education is fiscally sound for this year, but it’s several years down the road that has some worried.

“We are in decent shape,” said Business Manager Michael Belden. But that’s not likely to be the case in three years, board members said, because that’s when the state Alliance District grant will run out.

1del1St. Rita School is proud to announce that with the help of their students, families, faculty and staff, have raised $5,616 for Heifer International, whose mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty.

The overwhelming generosity enables our school-wide Lenten project to not only be successful but to also give the children the opportunity to experience giving to , and doing for others.
Bonnie-Jean Connal, a Heifer International joined the St. Rita School community for a prayer service to celebrate this achievement.

Hamden Hall Country Day School’s inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame recognized the extraordinary contributions of four outstanding student-athletes, all of whom went on to play college ball after graduation, a coach whose overall record garnered 252 wins and 60 losses, and the first team ever invited to play in post-season competition.

The inductees included state Sen. Leonard Fasano, New Haven Legal Assistance Association deputy director Alexis Highsmith Smith, local attorney Alphonse Ippolito, social entrepreneur and Career T.E.A.M. founder Chris Kuselias, former Hamden Hall basketball coach David Beckerman, and the school’s 1962-’63 basketball team.

All were honored for their outstanding achievements both on the field and in the community at the induction dinner, which was held April 12 at Hamden Hall’s Beckerman Athletic Center.

“This inaugural class truly reflects the values and standards of excellence representative of a Hamden Hall education,” said Head of School Bob Izzo. “The four individuals were stellar students and athletes, coach Beckerman and his record are legendary, and the 1963 basketball team established a legacy for our entire athletic program.” … Continue Reading
