hamdenhigh2Hamden High School will be getting a minor facelift in anticipation of the arrival of  representatives from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, which will perform its accreditation process.

The Legislative Council recently approved bonding $231,500 for work at the school to ensure it is up to code and meets NEASC standards.

1del1The Hamden Public Schools, in partnership with local community organizations, will host “Hamden Family University” on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. 

The day is designed to help families and educators join hands to support student success. The program will consist of various workshops that parents and guardians can choose from, such as parenting skills; navigating the school system; family health and wellness and parents’/guardians personal growth and development. 

Community members 14 years and older who would like to volunteer for Hamden Family University are needed between 7:30 a.m and 4 p.m. Tasks may include childcare, hallway monitors, classroom assistants and more. … Continue Reading

Hamden Education Foundation Accepting Nominations for Outstanding Athletes and Coaches

hamdenhigh2The Hamden Education Foundation is once again accepting nominations for distinguished Hamden High School athletes and coaches to honor this November at its 11th Annual Athletic Hall of Fame dinner

The dinner will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19  at Laurel View Country Club, 310 West Shepard Ave. in Hamden.

To submit a nomination for an outstanding Hamden High School athlete who graduated prior to June 2003 or a distinguished coach, contact Wendy Ocone, Hamden Public Schools at 203- 407-2202 or via email at [email protected]  for an application.

Nominations must be submitted no later than Aug. 15.

Ciara Ortiz, a student at Hamden Hall, was among the 17 middle school students who participated in the Summer Middle-school Opportunity for Research in Environmental Science (SMORES) program July 7-11 at Quinnipiac University.

Hosted by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Center for Science Teaching and Learning at Quinnipiac, the QU SMORES program is a commuter program designed for middle school students interested in discovering how research in environmental science takes place and how it relates to science-inquiry based learning that they may experience within their own science classrooms. … Continue Reading

decaEgg rolls and business plans recently placed two Hamden High School students first in recently-held international competitions held in Atlanta, Georgia in June.

Carly Semack and Nicole Ewert presented business plans for “Rock and Egg Roll,” a food truck that sells a variety of egg rolls in the New Haven area. The seniors, who have since graduated, walked the judges through the concept, how it would be funded and how much money the idea would make.

There would be “everyday egg rolls,” the girls said, along with different varieties for different occasions. The truck would travel around the area and take part in food truck festivals, they said, but would be stationed daily in downtown New Haven, where its target audience would be locals, shoppers, business people and students. … Continue Reading

1del1A body that washed up on a Stratford beach today was reportedly that of Hamden resident Amy Golda, the Hamden Public Schools Director of Fine Arts.

According to Stratford Police, the body was found floating in the water at about noon on Friday. Golda had been reported missing Friday morning.
