Members of the Hamden High School Students Against Destructive Decisions recently marked National Red Ribbon Week, one of the nations oldest substance abuse prevention initiatives.

As part of this year’s campaign, Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD) announced a new pledge program called #protectURSelfie. Rather than the traditional “sign here” pledge campaigns, teens were asked to take a selfie and post it on any social media channel using the hashtag #protectURSelfie. … Continue Reading

Nicholas Burns, a career diplomat who played a key role in how the Bush Administration dealt with the fall of the Berlin Wall, spoke Monday at “Remembering the Fall of the Berlin Wall: 25 Years Later,” a forum at Southern Connecticut State University to commemorate the 25th anniversary of that historic milestone.

Burns was involved in the discussions on Berlin and Germany before and during the time that the wall came down. In 1990, he was appointed by President George H.W. Bush to the National Security Council, a post he would hold until 1995, effectively bridging the administrations of Bush and President Bill Clinton. … Continue Reading

1stritaSt. Rita School eighth-graders continued an All Saints Day tradition started decades ago at the former Daniel J. Barry Junior High School.

The students researched their own patron saint and using the information they discovered, created the figure of the person using a two-liter soda bottle. Originally students used bowling pins donated to the school, but now use the empty soda bottles to build their creations.

“Their saints usually come marching in on All Saints Day,” a school official said, “but this year we brought them to church the day before so they would be on the alter for that Holy Day.”  … Continue Reading

Some special seniors went back to school Tuesday as Sacred Heart’s marked its sixth Annual Grandparents’ Day.

Sponsored by the Office of Mission Advancement, sophomores invited their grandparents to campus for the morning, when they enjoyed a continental breakfast and songs from the upcoming musical, “Singin’ in the Rain.”

They also heard from SHA President Sr. Sheila O’Neill and current grandfather and former parent Robert Lyons, Sr. The students and their grandparents took photos and participated in a prayer service in the Mt. Sacred Heart Chapel. … Continue Reading
