1dkel1Hamden Hall Country Day School presents an evening with former NBA basketball standout and Connecticut native Vin Baker as the fourth installment of its Beckerman Lecture Series.

On Thursday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m., Baker will engage audiences with an inspirational message based on his own experiences personally and professionally. The former University of Hartford player – whose all-time leading scorer college record still holds today – was drafted in 1993 by the Milwaukee Bucks as the team’s power forward and center.

In 1997 he was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics, where he stayed until 2002. His career in the NBA also took him to the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, and the Los Angeles Clippers until his retirement in 2006. … Continue Reading

1del177The Hamden Rotary Club has awarded a grant of $1,000 to MOM’s Clinic at Hamden High School.

 

A part of Quinnipiac Valley Health District, the free
clinic is available to students in need and provides a variety of services.

hamden children centerThe Hamden Children’s Center will get an infusion of funds from the state that will be used to upgrade security on the Whitney Avenue campus, as well as address infrastructure issues such as a new roof and HVAC upgrades.

The facility, started in 1833 as the New Haven Orphanage Asylum, now provides services for children with emotional and mental problems and who have come from abusive situations.

Applications Being Accepted for Wintergreen Magnet

Applications are now being accepted for students who are Hamden residents wishing to attend the Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School for the 2015-2016 school year.

Applications are available in all elementary schools, Hamden Middle School, Wintergreen Magnet School and Central Office, 60 Putnam Avenue.

Students will be selected for admission through a computerized lottery process.  However, due to class size limitations, there will be extremely limited placements made in grades one through seven.

The deadline for receipt of applications for this year’s lottery is Feb. 9.

1del1Congratulations to Hope DeFeo of Hamden, representing Connecticut and Hamden Elks Lodge #2224, who placed first in the U14 (ages 12-13) Division at the Elks Area 1 Soccer Shoot competition in Augusta, Maine.

The regional “Shoot”, which took place in November, features qualifying players from all of the New England states and New York. Hope took home the first place trophy in her division by winning a shootout with another competitor 10 to 8. … Continue Reading
