He was the beloved husband for 19 years to Lisa Cofrancesco Verneris; beloved father to Hannah and Zachary Verneris; brother of, Dr. Michael Verneris (Erin) of Minnetonka, MN and Marc Verneris (Marga) of Cheshire. She was born on March 19, 1923, the daughter of the late Rudolph and Gladys Roberts Veith. She moved to rural Hamden as a young child, attended the old Centerville School and graduated from Hamden High School in 1941.

She was born in Syracuse, NY, on Sept. 1, 1936, a daughter of the late Waylan and Celia White Powers and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.

Mrs. Mahon is survived by her daughters, Deborah Mahon of Branford, Karen Anziano and her husband Dan of Wallingford, Michelle Donahue and her husband Troy of Middlefield, and Donna Williams of Wallingford; her grandchildren, Austin Mahon, Rory Maxwell, James Anziano, Stephanie Sargalski and her husband Dan, Christy Williams, and Tyler Cruz; her five great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly; her siblings, Linda Dines and her companion Herbie, Berna Nye and her companion Jerry, Perry Powers and his wife Candy, and Gary Powers and his wife Lisa, all of New York; and several nieces and nephews. He was the devoted father of Matthew and Christopher Banas and the brother of Robert (Teri) Banas, David (Tina) Banas and Jane Higgins. Mr. Mackey was born Sept. 1,1926 in Graigueswood, Freshford, County Kilkenny, Ireland, a son of the late William and Catherine Mackey. He came to the U.S. in the 1950’s where he worked for the Regional Water Authority for more than 30 years.

In 1959 he met and married the love of his life, the late Evelyn Gallagher Mackey. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Rita Church in Hamden, a longtime member of the New Haven Gaelic Football and Hurling Club/Irish American Community Center in East Haven where he just recently watched his beloved Kilkenny Hurling team win the championship. … Continue Reading
