The Lockup is under construction on Dixwell Avenue.

An application for a tax incentive for a new self-storage facility brought out some strong opinions from some members of the Legislative Council on another similar project already well underway.

The council’s Economic and Development Committee was asked Monday to approve a tax incentive for a new self-storage facility proposed by Philmor REI Hamden LLC on Putnam Avenue. But it was another self-storage facility under construction on Dixwell Avenue by the entrance to the Wilbur Cross Parkway that the council members wanted to talk about — and the talk wasn’t good. … Continue Reading

Foley Car Tax Cap Plan Not Playing Well in Hamden

tom foley

Tom Foley, Republican candidate for Governor.

The year started out with a proposal from Gov. Dannel Malloy to eliminate the car tax, which died in committee after a backlash from the municipal leaders who would have to deal with the loss of revenue.

Now, a similar plan is being proposed by the man hoping to take Malloy’s job this November.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Foley announced this week that he would support a proposal to cap at 30 mills the amount a city or town could collect in car taxes. For a town like Hamden, which has a mill rate of 39.93, that would mean a considerable cut in revenue. And that Foley’s proposal calls for the state to cover that loss doesn’t make Hamden Mayor Scott Jackson feel any better. … Continue Reading

September 19, 2014 Local Government Comments Off on ZBA Grants Variances to Landlords for Student Housing Permits

zba

Hamden property owner Edgar Calderon asked the Zoning Board of Appeals to grant a variance after he was late renewing his student housing permit. The board approved his and several other similar requests Thursday.

Four Hamden property owners can breathe a sigh of relief after the Zoning Board of Appeals Thursday approved their applications for a variance allowing them to keep their student housing permits.

The four, along with nine other property owners, missed the Aug. 1 deadline to renew the permits for the 2014-15 school year. Because the Planning and Zoning Commission instituted a moratorium on the permits last year, if a permit expires, it can’t be renewed. … Continue Reading
