fitch-ratingsProgress is being made, but Hamden’s financial outlook is still negative, according to Fitch Rating.

The firm is one of a handful of ratings agencies that issues reports on the financial status of municipalities, usually twice a year in April and August.

The good news is Fitch did not downgrade the town’s bond rating, holding it at BBB+. But it maintains a negative outlook for Hamden, mostly based on its low fund balance and high pension obligations. But there are signs of improvement, according to the report. … Continue Reading

New Hamden Trash and Recycling is Working, But Not All Happy with the Program

1del1They’re big and they’re bulky — too big and bulky for some residents. But they’re getting results.

It’s been almost two months since the new trash and recycling program began, and while town officials say it’s working well, many residents aren’t happy with the size of the two 96-gallon bins now required to be used for trash and recyclables.

It wasn’t long after the bins were distributed that the complaints began. In response, at residents request the town is switching 96-gallon bins for smaller  64-gallon bins, and are in the process of getting 48-gallons bins. … Continue Reading

It’s a crowded field, but two Hamden residents are hoping they can stand out in the list of candidates for state senator in the 94th District.

The seat opened up when State Sen. Toni Harp was elected mayor of New Haven. State Rep.  Gary Holder-Winfield went on to win her seat, opening up his seat in the 94th district.

The winner of the election will only be in office for about two weeks, but will go into the November elections as the incumbent. … Continue Reading

Hamden to Get State Funding for Maselli Farm Study

1del1The town of Hamden will receive an $18,000 grant that will be used for a feasibility study to determine the best use for the Maselli Farm property.

The grant is one of more than 40 farms, agricultural non-profits and municipalities will receive from the state totaling $880,327 as part of an ongoing effort to expand Connecticut’s growing agricultural economy, according to Gov. Malloy’s office.  … Continue Reading
