1del1Billing it as “better than ever,” local businesses, artisans and musicians will unite in September to celebrate all that makes Whitneyville special.

This year’s Whitneyville Fall Festival will take place on Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1235 Whitney Ave. on the corner of Whitney and Putnam avenues in Hamden.

Organizers are looking for local artisans and crafters to be vendors at the festival this year, the festival’s fourth annual. Anyone interested in participating can stop in Books & Co. soon or send an email to whitneyvillefallfestival@gmail.com.

Parking is available at municipal parking lots. The rain date is Oct. 4. Admission is free.

Today is the 100th anniversary of the day World War I started on July 28, 1914.

Billed as “the war to end all wars,” it began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by a Bosnian Serb citizen, and led to a declaration of war that ultimately  pitted Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan and other against Austria–Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire.

The United States didn’t get involved until 1917, a year before the Nov. 11, 1918 end, though it would take another year for the signing of the Treaty of Versailles that officially ended the war. … Continue Reading

The Legislative Council meets at 7 p.m. in Thornton Wilder Auditorium at Miller Memorial LIbrary. The council’s Finance Committee holds a Public Hearing at 7:15 p.m. on the issuance of up to $15 million in General Obligation Refinancing Bonds.

The SoHa Farmers Market takes place from 4 to 8 p.m. at 943 Dixwell Ave. This week they are giving away two Farmers Market bag filled with gourmet selections from Monday’s SoHa Market. Click here to enter to win.
