1del2As it does every year, the town of Hamden will mark Veterans Day with several events, beginning this week.

A special concert will take place on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Hamden Middle School. “The New American Freedom Train Show,” features award-winning country singer/songwriter/musician Tim Maggert from Nashville.

Admission is free, although donations are encouraged. Proceeds will benefit House of Heroes, Connecticut Chapter, which builds housing for homeless veterans. … Continue Reading

piesThe Dunbar United Church of Christ 46th Annual Apple Festival takes place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church at 419 Dunbar Hill Road.

Home-made apple pies will be available on a fist-come, first-served basis.  Proceeds from Apple Pies sales go to outreach programs in the community. Bring the family for a fun and delicious day — the festival will be held rain or shine!

After days of rain, Mother Nature decided to cooperate for the event, bringing mild temperatures and dry skies for the festival that closed out the 2014 season at the park. On Friday, Town Center Park closes out the 2014 season with its third annual Food Truck Festival. More than 40 food trucks are expected to be in attendance, and here’s some of the ones that have been announced:

1del1Citizens Campaign for the Environment and the Watershed Partnership will host a workshop and discussion about lawn care pesticides and their negative impacts on children’s health on Thursday, Oct. 23 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Keefe Center, 11 Pine St.

Guest speaker Dr. Jerry Silbert will talk about the science behind those health risks and how to reduce children’s exposure to toxic pesticides where they learn and play.
