DeLauro Decries Burger King Acquisition as Tax Evasion

bkCongresswoman Rosa DeLauro doesn’t find the merger of Burger King and  Tim Hortons too appetizing.

That’s because the acquisition of the $11 billion Canadian donut chain means a move of Burger King’s corporate offices to Canada — saving the home of the Whopper from paying U.S. taxes.

“Yet another company plans to engage in a tax gimmick and dodge taxes by moving their business out of the country. This needs to come to an end,” DeLauro said in a statement Tuesday. “If Congress is unwilling to take action—which it has shown little appetite for—President Obama should act to stop companies from moving their mailbox overseas to avoid paying their fair share of U.S. taxes. … Continue Reading

The installation of a new water main along Whitney Avenue continues…and continues to be a headache for local businesses.

A Hamden business is one of almost two dozen featured in a new state tourism campaign that highlights its many antique dealers.

Governor Dannel P. Malloy and state Office of Tourism Director Randy Fiveash last week announced the launch of the first-ever Connecticut Antiques Trail, a curated online guide to “the finest antiquing experiences across the state.”

While Urbanminers at 31 Manila Ave. is primarily a deconstruction and resale business, much of its inventory is made up of antiques such as wood floors, doors, staircase railings and cabinets reclaimed from homes and businesses that are slated for demolition that would be impossible to find in stores today. … Continue Reading

On Monday the former SBC Restaurant building came down to make way for a self-storage facility.

Two Hamden business buildings — one on Dixwell Avenue and the other on Whitney Avenue — are being demolished to make way for different uses.

On Monday, demolition began at the former SBC Restaurant at 1950 Dixwell Ave. by where Route 15 goes over Dixwell. The restaurant had been closed for some time and is now going to be a climate-controlled self-storage facility, according to Hamden Economic Director Dale Kroop. … Continue Reading
