Hamden Council Approves Budget with Slight Tax Increase

townhallmemorialThe Legislative Council Monday approved its 2014-15 budget which came in as promised — with less than a mill increase, though barely.

The $206.8 million budget is funded with $159.5 million from taxpayers and the rest from other sources. It carries with it a 39.93 mill rate, up from the current 38.94 rate.

For the resident with an average real estate assessment of $200,000, taxes will rise $208, from $7,788 to $7,996. … Continue Reading

fitch-ratingsProgress is being made, but Hamden’s financial outlook is still negative, according to Fitch Rating.

The firm is one of a handful of ratings agencies that issues reports on the financial status of municipalities, usually twice a year in April and August.

The good news is Fitch did not downgrade the town’s bond rating, holding it at BBB+. But it maintains a negative outlook for Hamden, mostly based on its low fund balance and high pension obligations. But there are signs of improvement, according to the report. … Continue Reading

Hamden Republicans Question New Positions in Proposed Budget

Traffic calming is one area the mayor says needs a dedicated employee to oversee.

The Republican members of the Town Council were critical of the several new town job positions Mayor Scott Jackson proposed when he unveiled his 2014-15 budget to the Legislative Council Tuesday.

The$207 million proposed budget, which carries a 1.25 mill increase, would add several new positions, including a Traffic Calming Specialist, a Program Specialist for Public Information and a new technology department headed by a Chief Information Officer.

Jackson said the introduction of the new trash and recycling bins is proof that the Public Information Specialist is needed. Many residents were taken by surprise, he said, and the implementation of the program was difficult because of it.  … Continue Reading

governmentcenterMayor Scott Jackson presented his proposed $207.7 million budget to the Legislative Council Tuesday night that includes a 1.25 mill increase he said is necessary to keep the town running for the next year.

The majority of the increase would go to the pension account, he said, which is mandated by the terms of the bonding the council approved last year that increased the fund by $125 million.
